7 universal rules for CVs in the Arab world

Despite differences between countries, these principles apply across the entire Arab world in 2026.

01

Professional photo โ€” a different standard from Europe

Unlike English-speaking countries (UK, USA), a photo is expected in all Arab countries. It must be recent (less than 2 years old), in professional attire, on a plain light background, passport or bust format. A selfie or casual photo can disqualify your application.

02

Bilingual = absolute competitive advantage

In Morocco, Algeria and Egypt, a bilingual French/Arabic or English/Arabic CV doubles your chances. In the Gulf, Arabic + English is highly valued even for technical positions. ForgCV supports Arabic for your CV.

03

More personal information than in Europe

In the Arab world, it is standard (and often mandatory) to include: date of birth, nationality, marital status, and sometimes religion for public sector roles. Do not follow European norms on this point.

04

Saudisation / Emiratisation / Nationalisation

Gulf countries have hiring quotas for nationals (Nitaqat in Saudi Arabia, Emiratisation in the UAE). As an expat, target international companies, free zones (freezones in Dubai), and sectors with a shortage of local talent.

05

ATS increasingly used in the Gulf

Large UAE and KSA companies are increasingly using ATS (Taleo, Workday, SAP SuccessFactors). ATS-compatible format is essential: standard fonts, no complex tables, machine-readable text.

06

Networking and referrals (Wasta)

In Arab culture, personal connections (called "wasta" in the Gulf) play a crucial role in hiring. An excellent CV backed by an internal referral multiplies your chances by 3 to 5.

07

Different format for public vs. private sector

Public sector (Morocco, Algeria, Egypt): official forms imposed, little creative freedom. Private sector and multinationals: same freedom as in Europe, polished design appreciated. Adapt your CV accordingly.

FAQ โ€” Arab World CV: your questions

Yes, in the majority of Arab countries (UAE, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Morocco, Algeria), a professional photo is expected and recommended on the CV. It must be formal, plain light background, professional attire. This is a major difference from Western norms (UK, USA) where a photo is discouraged.
In Morocco and Algeria, prepare two versions: one in French (private sector, multinationals) and one in Arabic (public sector, local companies). A bilingual CV is a major advantage and can tip the scales in your favour. ForgCV lets you create your CV in 6 languages including French and Arabic.
The UAE (Dubai, Abu Dhabi) and Saudi Arabia (Vision 2030) are the most active markets for expats. Qatar remains attractive particularly in construction and energy. Bahrain and Kuwait offer opportunities in Islamic finance and banking. The UAE remains the most liberal market with the greatest sectoral diversity.
2 pages is the standard in Gulf countries (UAE, KSA). Including a photo, nationality, date of birth, and visa status is expected, unlike Western norms. Very experienced profiles can go up to 3 pages without issue.
Saudisation (the Nitaqat programme) requires companies in Saudi Arabia to meet quotas for Saudi employees. As an expat, this means some companies will prefer to hire nationals. To maximise your chances: target multinationals, free zones, and sectors where local skills are scarce (advanced tech, specialised fields).
Clearly state your status in the header of your CV: "Currently on Visit Visa" (if searching locally), "Employment Visa available" (if already sponsored), or "Seeking Employment Visa Sponsorship" (if applying from abroad). This avoids misunderstandings and shows transparency.
