Create my CV now โ7 universal rules for CVs in the Arab world
Despite differences between countries, these principles apply across the entire Arab world in 2026.
Professional photo โ a different standard from Europe
Unlike English-speaking countries (UK, USA), a photo is expected in all Arab countries. It must be recent (less than 2 years old), in professional attire, on a plain light background, passport or bust format. A selfie or casual photo can disqualify your application.
Bilingual = absolute competitive advantage
In Morocco, Algeria and Egypt, a bilingual French/Arabic or English/Arabic CV doubles your chances. In the Gulf, Arabic + English is highly valued even for technical positions. ForgCV supports Arabic for your CV.
More personal information than in Europe
In the Arab world, it is standard (and often mandatory) to include: date of birth, nationality, marital status, and sometimes religion for public sector roles. Do not follow European norms on this point.
Saudisation / Emiratisation / Nationalisation
Gulf countries have hiring quotas for nationals (Nitaqat in Saudi Arabia, Emiratisation in the UAE). As an expat, target international companies, free zones (freezones in Dubai), and sectors with a shortage of local talent.
ATS increasingly used in the Gulf
Large UAE and KSA companies are increasingly using ATS (Taleo, Workday, SAP SuccessFactors). ATS-compatible format is essential: standard fonts, no complex tables, machine-readable text.
Networking and referrals (Wasta)
In Arab culture, personal connections (called "wasta" in the Gulf) play a crucial role in hiring. An excellent CV backed by an internal referral multiplies your chances by 3 to 5.
Different format for public vs. private sector
Public sector (Morocco, Algeria, Egypt): official forms imposed, little creative freedom. Private sector and multinationals: same freedom as in Europe, polished design appreciated. Adapt your CV accordingly.
